Matthew 2

****Week 1 Memory Verse****

In those days John the Baptist came preaching
in the wilderness of Judea,  and saying,
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’”
Matthew 3:1-3

READ Matthew 2

Matthew, Chapter 2, is about how King Herod had heard about the birth of JESUS, and had asked the three wise men to seek the baby out and bring news of the child back to Herod .

7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

After the wise men delivered their gifts gold, frankincense, and myrrh, GOD came to them in a dream .

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

The angel of the LORD came to Joseph, and he took Mary and the baby to Egypt.

Herod killed every child 2 years and under thinking he had killed JESUS.

What if the three wise men had not listened to GOD in their dream, and returned to Herod?  We must be wise and listen to GOD as He speaks to us!  The Holy Spirit is GOD’s messenger.  We must open our heart and listen!

TIME OF REFLECTION:
Think of a time when you have not obeyed the prompting of the Holy Spirit.  What was the outcome?  Do you have consequences that you must deal with for not listening?

Is there an area of your life that the Holy Spirit has been directing or speaking to you about?  Have you surrendered to His will or are you still struggling to conquer your own?

Proverbs 16:25 says, There is a way that seems right to man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.  Find at least two examples of people from the Bible whom God gave specific instructions to that they did not follow.  Write down who they were, the scripture reference, and what the consequences were for not listening and obeying. (A few examples are Adam & Eve, Eli & his sons, Jonah, King Saul, King David, King Solomon, and the list goes on!)
